We all know how bad the obesity problem is, but I found this article in MSNBC that says raising more than 100 kilos over – Hyper obese – is growing at an alarming rate.
People over 100 kg are the fastest growing group of people in the United States, researchers said on Monday.
They found that the percentage of seriously obese was 50 percent higher in 2005 than it had in 2000 – an amazing rate of growth.
"The proportion of people at the highest point of escalation continues to grow at a rapid pace despite increased public attention to the dangers of obesity and the increased use of drastic loss strategies such as bariatric surgery," said Roland Sturm, an economist at Rand Corporation, non-profit research institute.
"The explosion in the use of bariatric surgery did not make a noticeable attenuation in the trend of obesity," Sturm said in a statement.
Rapid rise in overstimulation in the US
Researchers found that based on the self-reported height and which tends to devalue the part, 3% of Americans are already seriously obese – defined as body mass indexes 40 or higher.
The body mass index is calculated by dividing the square of a person's height in meters in kilograms.
Researchers, whose report will be published later this year in the Public Health magazine, found that the proportion of Americans with a BMI of 30 or more increased by 24% between 2000 and 2005.
The percentage of people with a BMI of 40 or more increased by 50% and the percentage of Americans with BMI of 50 or more increased by 75%.
The number of bariatric procedures, including stomach suturing and stomach bypass surgery, increased to around 200,000 in 2006 from 13,000 in 1998.
