Growing up with bone disease, Sheila Brooks came to be identified by her disability. Excercise? He could not. Become an athlete? No way. By the time he was an adult, this self-story had solidified. was completely fossilized from the gym. Now, however, he finally dropped this mental wall – and lost 52 pounds (and count).
"At first, I was terrified."
Only a few months ago, the idea of walking in a gym was enough to make Sheila Brooks want to turn and run.
For Tarila, 49, of Edmonds, Washington, the gym was more than intimidating. she felt outdated. He never thought he would be comfortable enough to walk through the door, let alone exercise there every day.
"I have a free entry through my work at a gym that is two miles away, so I really did not have any excuse not to go except for fear," Sheila says.
"I was really uncomfortable with the idea of working in front of other people, I thought" I'm awkward, "and" I'm curious to look. "These were the sorts of things that passed through my head, and it was enough to keep me out the gym ".
Sheila's fear came from a deeply rooted conviction that he was not an athletic or naturally capable person – and would never have been. This is because Sheila was born with bone disease. Her disability and her beliefs have kept her back from participating in physical activity.
"It keeps me from doing all kinds of things with great influence. Growing up, I was not athletic at all, "she reflected." I could not participate in sports and exercise was not part of my life. "
As a result, Sheila believed she was not strong and her body was simply not cut for exercise. So he avoided.
She was overweight, unhappy, unhealthy, and generally she was stuck.
Over the years, Sheila's inner story of what she could not do was more than a story about sports. It became an identity that kept her from experiencing everything life has to offer.
I was so overweight I was overweight and very depressed and sad about life in general I had shut myself off I thought I could not do anything and I hated the way I looked, so I just said not at all. something had to change. "
So Sheila took a leap of faith and signed Precision Nutrition Coaching, making a conscious effort to trust the program.
"I put my faith in the PN program, I did not have any faith in myself, so I thought, why not put my faith in something else?"
Within a few months with Precision Nutrition, Sheila learned a lot, including "why" behind her goals, as well as practical basic nutritional elements such as meal preparation and control share. She also did her workouts regularly … from the safety and comfort of her home.
But the gym was still feeling like a "great monster" tired of hiding.
Sheila decided that it was time to face her fear.
He got on the bus for support. Prompt for Lisanne's Coach: Instead of jumping on both legs, why not start small?
"My coach suggested choosing an exercise in the training program that I felt comfortable doing, for me, that was the cumulative sumo." He said, "Okay, just come in and just do such an exercise, then let go. Do not do all the workout, just do an exercise and let go. "
She drew her nerve, went into the gym and made 10 repetitions of a silent sumo.
"I was terrified and I felt curious," she admits, "but I went in and I did 10 deadlifts and that was it and I left. It all started there."
This simple act proved to be the catalyst for enormous changes.
After that, Sheila had a little more confidence, so she was scheduled a session with a gym trainer to show her. The next time he entered, he was able to do the full PN exercise.
Was he still nervous and inconvenient? Yes. But he did it anyway.
And he knew coach Lisanne was cheering on her.
After facing her fears from the gym, Sheila not only poured pounds, but she started throwing that old story for herself.
Sheila promised to show up in the gym every day and keep it. At the same time, he maintained PN's everyday lessons and habits and came to Coach Lisanne whenever he needed a little extra support.
The consequence of Sheila performed and saw results in her body: Just six months after the program, she had already lost 55 pounds and looked better in her clothes.
Meanwhile, Sheila began to realize that something was happening, but important.
Her old beliefs about herself – about impotence, weakness or weakness – have been replaced by something much more powerful.
"I began to realize that many of these mental scenarios that I had told myself in the past are not real."
For example, I discovered that I am very strong, because of my disability, I can not jump and I can not run – but I am strong, I am somewhat surprised at the burdens I can lift up, now I look at the competitive power and I will never I never thought this would be feasible. "
He adds, "It's like I've discovered that my body is about something, and I'm good at it."
The discovery of her power has opened up a whole new world for Sheila, whether it's day to day life or great adventures.
"There are small things I can do, such as the transport of grocery bags, which are much easier nowadays." This summer I went on a hike, I live in the northwest, and hiking is a huge thing here, it's really fun to do now. "
In a bold move, Sheila took even a Brazilian jiu jitsu class. "I went because I wanted to see what it was, I'm not so afraid to try new things anymore."
He is still planning a countryside tradition through France – an incredible holiday for someone who previously tried to walk more than a mile.
To date, Sheila has dropped 52 pounds from her highest weight. (In recent months, he has gained three pounds of muscle and continues to lose inches.)
"My time with PN was to redefine myself," says Sheila. "I have a physical disability, yes, but now I realize that, for years, I had limited myself.
"Today, I realize that I can lift heavy weights and things, but it's more than that … I'm not going to define myself as what I can not do, I do not have to restrict myself anymore."
At last, for Salela, the possibilities are really endless.
