10 Things Every Successful Fitness and Nutrition Trainer Does. The best buses do this every day. How much do you do?

What makes for a successful fitness and nutrition coach? It's not just what you know … it's what you do (every day). Here are some of the practices that elite coaches use to get results. Keep track of how much you've learned.


You know the guy. He is the coach who seems to have it all together.

They have a long waiting list with eager prospects. The results of their clients are always impressive. They make big money doing what they love. And, just to make us all a little more jealous, they make it seem effortless.

Welcome to the coach elite.

What makes elite coaches so special?

Is it their education? Their hard work and commitment Their passion? Or do they know something that most people don't?

The answer to all these questions is … yes.

Elite coaches know something that most do not. But it's not just knowledge. It is a set of practices that work daily.

And this set of practices helps them improve building strong relationships with their customers, promoting change and improving their philosophy.

Here are the active habits that set elite coaches apart from the rest.

1. Elite coaches practice the art of human connection.

The best coaches are not only better at adapting their workouts and diet plans. It's better with people.

Elite coaches do not limit conversations to "here is what you need to do". talk to customers in a way that cultivates real human connection.

Asking sincere questions, expressing compassion and a constant source of support, help their clients around obstacles to achieve their goals.

To apply this approach:

Ask top questions that help customers open and explore, imagine, or capitalize on old successes. For example:

  • If things were better with your eating / exercising, what would be different in your life? What would you rather do? Less; Am I proud of?
  • Imagine you have the body and health you want. What did you do to achieve this? What did you have to give up?
  • What have you achieved in the past? How can we do more of this and apply it to your health and fitness? "

And once you ask, you really hear their answers. Let them sink. Learn from them. (For more information on this approach, see: Effective Bus Talk: What to Tell Customers and Why It Matters).

2. Elite coaches ask 'why'. (Again … again … again.)

You've probably seen it millions of times.

New customers have a taste for how hard it is to change their eating habits, make the extra 10 squats, run another mile and change their lives for all that … and suddenly they don't want it that bad.

Elite coaches have a way of inspiring their clients – at every session – to want the hard work. They know how to unlock their customers' deepest motivations, sense of purpose and inner fire.

How do they do this? For one thing, they know how to ask their customers why.

To apply this approach:

Use the & # 39; Five Whys & # 39; technique. This is how it works:

When you set goals with your customers, you ask them why.

Q: "Why do you want to do this?"
A: "Why I Want to Lose Weight".

Then, regardless of their answer, you ask why again.

Q: "And why do you want to lose weight in the first place?"
A: "Because I was thinner and it bothered me how heavy I got."

Keep asking why for a set five times. It's amazingly challenging – and amazingly effective at reaching people's basic motivations.

(By the way, elite coaches use the Five Whys for themselves. Because they know that getting to the heart of their own motivations is the best place to start).

3. Elite coaches help "competition".

Want to learn a secret? In an elite coach, there is no competition.

Elite coaches do not feel unsafe about what other coaches do because they know how to use their individuality as an advantage in their careers.

Instead of hiding and accumulating their knowledge, elite coaches share this knowledge and facilitate conversations and thus create a trusted breed around them.

Find your race and help people in your race succeed and they will be more likely to succeed.

To apply this approach:

Find out about other people's content and social flows.

Take the extra few minutes to leave comments on iTunes on their podcasts. review their books in the Amazon. share their posts on Facebook. and so on.

These simple actions will help them develop their experience and expand their reach. As a bonus, you can extend your own social networks to the process.

To embrace this concept, consider starting a Facebook group or other social community that will serve as a source of mutual support, discussion and inspiration. You will be able to answer questions and help your peers and position yourself as an expert.

4. Elite coaches do less.

"Doing everything" is a myth.

Spread Yourself Thin Thin is a first class ticket for frustration and failure. Instead, the top coaches understand what's really crucial between that particular market and their clientele, and they do.

Elite coaches also know that their clients can't do it all. They know that giving customers only a small habit at a time is much more effective than throwing an ambitious project at them and hoping for the best.

To apply this approach:

Give the "method of a habit" a try.

Of all the things your customer wants to do and succeed, work with them to understand what is the most important goal for them right now. Then, based on their goal, help them pick a single habit to start practicing today.

The habit should be so simple that it feels almost "very easy" and should be something they can do in five or ten minutes each day.

Have your client practice a habit every day for at least two weeks. Ask them to check back with you regularly to let you know if they have completed the task or not.

(If you have completed any type of PN workout, you will recognize this "one habit" method. There is a reason we recommend it: it is an integral part of our method because it works.)

5. Elite coaches practice the basics.

Bruce Lee said: "I'm not afraid of the man who has hit 10,000 kicks once, but I am afraid of the man who has kicked 10,000 times."

Kick Guy never needed the perfect kick. All he had to do was focus on managing the process and being great with all the pieces. And that was enough to scare Bruce Lee. (Scary enough.)

Elite coaches are like the Kick Guy. They are willing to apply the techniques – even the basic ones – over and over again, so that they can move on to true sovereignty.

They also take this approach to their clients, helping them put their own institutions in place and acquire the skills they need to achieve sustainable change.

To apply this approach:

Go back to the basics with something you enjoy doing and consider yourself "good enough". Think back to the first skills you learned to do this thing.

If you are a boxer, for example, consider your posture, hip movement or jab. Could you benefit from exercises that focus on your core techniques?

Or, if you once struggled with bad eating habits, pay attention to the meal. Do you still eat as slowly and carefully as you once did? Will you benefit from paying more attention to how full you feel at the end of each meal?

Choose an elementary thing that you could get from "good" to "great" or "great" to "positive killer". Then they work on improving this one thing. Ask for help from a colleague or peer if you like it.

You may feel weird about acting like a beginner again, but by doing so, you are on your way to ownership.

6. Elite coaches listen to what they don't want to hear.

Many coaches (logically) focus on trying to boost their customers' motivation – the side they are interested in changing.

But in the early stages of customer development, it doesn't work. Because this other side – the place that fears change and endures your efforts – is ridiculously strong. After all, it has prevented your customer from changing for a long time.

In order for your customers to move in the right direction, coaches need to do something that may sound a bit paradoxical: they must first hear the resistance.

Elite coaches hear about resistance. They are looking for it. Because they know they have to work with it, rather than against it.

To apply this approach:

Listen for your own resistance.

Think of something you want to change but haven't arrived yet. Suggestion: think of all the things you said to yourself that you should or should not do.

Write down the thing you want to change. Then ask yourself:

  • What's good for me not to change? (In other words, how NOT to change my strengths or help me solve a problem?)
  • What would be wrong about change? What should I give up or lose?

Write your answers.

How do you feel? Your resistance may feel a little calmer or quieter. you may feel a little more ready for change. Now that you understand your own resistance a little better, you can hear it in customer conversations as well.

7. Elite coaches know when to close.

Elite coaches have a lot of experience, but that doesn't mean they always shout at her.

Think: When someone asks, "What should I eat after exercise?" one expert answers the question: "You need to eat protein and carbohydrates".

But when a client asks "What should I eat after exercise?" one coach asks, "Tell me about your training program and what do you feel you can manage?" The coaches still think "What do you like to eat after exercise?"

A good coach doesn't mind being quiet, asking questions or fading into the background a little.

Many fitness professionals try to be skilled and coached at the same time. But that never works. You cannot talk and listen at the same time. You need to know how and when to switch between the two.

In other words: you need to know when to stop talking and I hear.

To apply this approach:

Try using this "expert vs. bus" checklist:

With your customers, you spend most of your time …

Expert Coach
Speaking and saying … or Listening and reflecting?
Tell them what you know … or What are you working on?
Answering questions? … or Asking questions?
Letting the client set the tone? … or guiding the client on a decision or action?
Direction and direction? … or guidance and accompaniment?
Taking center stage … or fading into the background?

If you are more on the "specialized" side of things, try to actively practice some of the "coaching" side of things.

8. Elite coaches are imperfect.

Many health and fitness professionals have high standards. most of us like to walk. In addition, we want to look like walking.

This is how we strive to improve our own health habits, work practices and self-presentation. We know that our bodies often advertise our services, so we worry about the best possible appearance.

But all too often, we try to be perfect. And that is our downfall.

Certainly, on the one hand, a small fire keeps you energized and sharp. But excessive pressure is a parking brake on performance.

(Was he ever drowning during a race or competition? He was probably overwhelmed by the pressure going on athlete all the time.)

So while elite coaches strive for excellence, they are not trying to be perfect – and they are not expecting their customers to be perfect, either.

To apply this approach:

Try sharing a little with your endless experience with your customers.

When confused with something, tell them for a while that you felt embarrassed, annoyed, or uncomfortable about yourself, whether you were working on your own fitness and nutrition journey or at other times trying to learn something new.

When they feel like failure, let everyone know sometimes: share one of your own mistakes – and maybe even how you fixed it.

9. Elite coaches keep it real.

If you work in the fitness and health industry, it is easy to throw away many ideas.


  • "Never eat processed foods."
  • "Always eat local, seasonal, organic food."

On the surface, it's hard to question. But true? Unless you live in a gig somewhere and grow your own food from the ground up, I doubt you always eat whole, raw, local, seasonal, organic foods.

This means that these ideal diets are not an ambition – they are impossible. Even for the world's leading experts.

Elite coaches are willing to do a real check. They realize that people do not need a nutritional deity to follow. No strict codes of conduct are needed that include words like "must", "always" and "never".

Instead of coaching from a fantasy space, elite coaches remain grounded. They help their clients make a little bit of progress.

To apply this approach:

Consider the rules you have set.

Examine all the "rules" and expectations about fitness, nutrition and health. Record what you can think of. Make sure you include words like "must", "always" and "never".

  • We should always …
  • You should never …
  • Being "fit" means that always …
  • Being "healthy" means that you never …
  • Eating "nutritious" means …

Now read your answers and think about whether the customer could reasonably "always" or "never" do them.

10. Elite coaches ask for help.

If you train other people, it only makes sense that you have tried your coach.

After all, if you've never coached through something, you can't understand what your customers are experiencing, thinking and feeling.

Elite coaches know this. They seek guidance and take it upon themselves. Sometimes it's not even physically relevant. It may be for their business, or for their personal lives (such as how to be a better parent or partner) or a hobby they are very passionate about.

The important thing is that they are willing to ask for help, to become vulnerable, to go through the process of change … just like their clients.

And they know how powerful this process of change is.

To apply this approach:

Make your checklist.

What areas of expertise are you looking for?
